There’s no reason why you can’t make simple changes to make a rented house feel like home. We have spent years renting, yet we have both owned too. I have also rented out my own place for a while in between moving areas and one of the most important things you need to do as a landlord is compare landlord insurance. In many ways renting can be preferable to owning your own place. The dishwasher breaks, call your landlord and hope they fix it quickly. Need a new boiler? Not your problem. Well, at least not for your bank balance; it might be a bit cold for a bit though.
If you are wanting to make decorative changes to your rental house, talk to your landlord. You might be surprised at how keen they are for you to do some basic things that will improve the overall quality of the property. And then you can add colours and your own style to make it feel more you.
One of the simplest and easiest ways to turn your house into your style is by adding wall art around the house. Whether that is posters with your favourite quotes or canvas prints above your bed, there are so many different types of wall art to choose from to your preference. You can make a collection around a favourite band or black and white wildlife photographs. Really try to think about your favourite things and go from there.
Think about your favourite colours, the ones that make you smile. Then think about the colours you would like in each room. A splash of colour in the lounge works well and then calmer colours in the bedroom help aid a night of restful sleep. It’s easy to add colours in the bedroom with bedding, we’ve recently changed to a crisp white set which has made a huge difference to what was a dull room. Then for our lounge, we’ve added blush pink cushions on our pale grey sofa to compliment each other.
Whether that is by hanging wall art or using wall stickers. Mirrors are also a great option as they can make a small space look larger and help to bounce light around a room. You can either prop them on the floor or if hanging them, just make sure to use something like Polyfilla to fill the holes before you leave.
If like me you manage to kill all living plants, try some succulents, or go for fake. Fresh flowers can also easily and quickly, brighten up rooms and hallways. A taller plant can help to draw attention away from other areas of a room.
Carpets not to your taste, don’t despair! Use the current trend of layering rugs to your advantage. In the living room place rugs under sofas and coffee tables. In the bedroom, try runners down each side of the bed.
It’s amazing how a few new cushions and a throw can totally change the look of, or update a tired room and add some colour. In the bathroom, if there is a shower curtain, replace it and then add some complementing coloured towels.
Light fixtures can be a simple and inexpensive way to change the look of a room. Take down dirty old pendants and replace them with new, fresh ones. Switching shades and lightbulbs is a great way to change the feel of a room with the lighting.
Candles are amazing for creating a cosy atmosphere. You can also use them to add decor to hallways and other areas. Think floor lanterns in the hallways and tea lights on bathroom ledges.
When we moved in we had some hideous blinds that made it feel like we were waking up in the hospital. You can either take them down or hide them under curtains. Again, just make sure you keep them somewhere safe as they’re essential if you want your deposit back.
