The Further Adventures of The Owl and the Pussy-cat: Review

I have always loved books and I’m really keen to foster this love of books with my children. The monkeys have so many books that their bookcase unit is full and I’ve had to use extra shelves. However I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many books.

Some of their favourite books are by Julia Donaldson, so I was excited to be sent two books to review. Julia Donaldson has written The Further Adventures of The Owl and the Pussy-cat as a sequel to the original poem The Owl and the Pussy-cat by Edward Lear.

read the poem to the boys and they liked the pictures which have been beautifully illustrated by Charlotte Voake. Finlay was able to point things out and ask questions from them. The next night I read The Further Adventures of The Owl and the Pussy-cat, which follows on really well from the poem. The Owl and the Pussy-cat have just got married and are having a nap when their golden wedding ring is stolen. They then embark on a journey of pursuit through the land of Lear armed with some jam, a honey roast ham and their runcible spoon.

Both the boys enjoyed this story and the flowing rhymes and rythms. They particularly enjoyed the detailed illustrations and we stopped at every page to look at them. The images helped to engage them in more than just listening to the story.

The book also comes with a cd in which Julia Donaldson reads the story. The second reading is accompanied by music which is the boys favourite. Kyle likes to look at and read the book at the same time as listening to it. It’s definitely a hit as Finlay even asked to put the cd on one afternoon after pre school.

Here is a video of Julia Donaldson reading the book.
