Sustainable living, green living, the slow and simple lifestyle, whatever you prefer to call it, has been a growing movement for a few years now. I fully jumped on board a while ago and I’ve not looked back.
A year of not buying fast fashion under my belt, yes that would be a second hand belt, and a new appreciation for growing and eating my own veg are probably my biggest green achievements of 2019!
I’m enjoying our families journey to a more green lifestyle and have pulled together a list of ideas that you can do this year to help make the planet a better place.
Don’t feel overwhelmed, even doing one item from this sustainable resolutions list will help! Pick one or two changes you haven’t made yet and see the benefits!
Think about what you’re buying
- Consider quitting buying fast fashion for a month. (Then see if you can go longer)
- Buy second hand first
- Attend a local swish event.
- Try out a clothing rental service – maybe a dress for an occasion or a holiday
- As bathroom items run out replace them with more eco friendly, plastic free alternatives.
- Before you buy anything, ask – do I really need this?
- Save up for experiences rather than possesions.
- Try out your local refill shop if you have one.
- Swap cling film for wax wraps, silicone bags or reusable containers.
- Buy your fruit and veg loose where possible.
All about the climate
- Switch to a renewable energy provider
- Try to reach your holiday destination by land and sea rather than flying.
- If you eat beef try and reduce it or cut it out completely.
- Plant a tree in your garden or find a local tree planting day to attend.
- Talk about climate change with your friends and family
- Have a go at growing your own seasonal fruit and vegetables
- Try more vegetarian and vegan meals and reduce the meat on your plate.
Your Community
- Arrange or join a local litter pick
- Take a reusable water bottle and coffee cup with you when you go out
- Buy products and services from people who are local to you where you can.
- Join the Olio app to share leftover food with your neighbours, or give good-quality supplies to a food bank or homeless charity.
- When you’re on the beach or in the countryside, bring a bag and clean up plastic waste you find.
- Find a local class to learn how to repair your clothes or how to knit new ones.
Less Rubbish
- Start a compost or wormery. If you don’t have the space research local community compost sharing options.
- Complete a waste audit to learn what you throw away most.
- Find an alternative to a regularly used item that comes in plastic packaging.
- If you have periods, invest in plastic free, organic or reusable period products.
- Take your lunch with you.
- Sell, swap or donate your unwanted clothing to make sure it’s going to someone who wants it.
