Go Green: 9 Tips For A Sustainable Home

Sustainability is a hot topic. Many people are trying to do their bit and live more consciously. These tips will help you on your way to a more sustainable life.

1. More plants

Plants not only provide more oxygen in the air but also much-needed greenery in the room. So make sure you have at least one plant in every room.

2. Limit the number of subscriptions

We’re talking about newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Have you been subscribing to various newspapers and magazines for years? Then take a good look at which ones are really necessary. Of course, it is nice if your friends and family can read something while they are having a cup of coffee with you, but is it really necessary to have so many different newspapers or magazines about the Alta Via 1 map or the Alta Via 2 Dolomites?

3. Switch off the lights

In rooms where nobody is present, there is no need to leave the lights on. Hang up notes to help your partner and children remember to turn off the lights when leaving a room. It can also work to install lights with a motion sensor.

4. Use the stand-by mode of devices

Encourage your partner and children to set their computers on standby. This way a computer uses less power when it is not used for a while.

5. Place paper bins

By placing paper bins, you stimulate the re-use of paper. For example, prints that do not turn out well, but which do not otherwise contain sensitive information. Instead of throwing these papers away immediately, you can use them as scrap paper.

6. Go for LED lighting

Replace all bulbs in your home with more economical and environmentally-friendly LED lights. The bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last three times as long as incandescent bulbs, for example. Because of their long life span, LED lamps are also a suitable option for smaller budgets.

7. No more plastic or paper cups

Paper or plastic coffee and teacups are handy for birthdays and children’s parties, but they create unnecessary extra waste. Replace them with reusable cups.

8. Recycle everything

Place special bins for all kinds of waste in a prominent place in the kitchen. Attach clear instructions on what to put in which bin.

9. Pull the plug out of the socket

Do you also leave the plug in the socket when you are not using an appliance? Then the appliance continues to use power. So always remove the plug from the socket.

As you can see, there are many small steps you can take to make your environment a little more environmentally friendly. All those steps together make for a pretty sustainable home!
