Green People Organic Reef Safe Sustainably Packaged Sun Lotion + WIN

Keeping my children’s skin safe in the sun is something I’m not prepared to compromise on. However when I started our green living journey and read more I realised just had bad for the environment and our bodies some normal sun lotion can be. The boys have both suffered with prickly heat over the years and Ava gets eczema and rashes along with prickly heat, despite buying well known, high protection sun lotions. I know after speaking to other Mum’s that it’s quite common. I’ve been using a few of Green People’s products and the bath stuff in particular has been great for Ava’s skin. So I was keen to try out their organic new reef safe, sustainable packaged sun lotion. I’m really impressed and I don’t say that lightly!

Green People reef safe Sun Lotion now comes in new Plant-based packaging
The reef-safe sun lotion comes in fully recyclable, renewable sugar cane packaging.  Farmed on sustainable land, this plant-based packaging is completely carbon-neutral.

We were sent the Organic Children Sun Lotion SPF 30, Natural sun lotion SPF30 and the SPF30 natural & organic facial sun cream with high levels of antioxidants.

Organic Children Scent Free Sun Lotion SPF30 150ml – £19.00

When it comes to the kids I normally smother then in SPF50 and put them in UV swimwear when we are abroad or in the paddling pool. So I was initially unsure when Green People sent me factor SPF30 but there is a very good reason for it. I thought that SPF50 offers double the protection of SPF30 but I was wrong! SPF50 offers 98% protection and SPF30 offers 97%. A tiny one percent difference which I was amazed to discover.

Research has shown that when we apply SPF50 there can be a tendency to reapply the sun cream less frequently and also stay out in the sun for longer which I am probably guilty of despite being a real worrier about potential sunburn and skin damage. In fact to get good UVA defence we must regularly top up our protection no matter what the factor.

How does a natural sun lotion help prevent prickly heat?

All three kids get prickly heat with Finlay and Ava being particularly miserable with it on our last holiday I’m keen to help prevent it for them. Prickly heat rash is caused by sweat glands in the skin becoming blocked. This stops the sweat from escaping the body and instead leads it to leak into nearby skin, causing redness and rashes.

One of the causes of blocked sweat glands is waterproof sunscreen, which contain pore-clogging ingredients such as mineral oils and silicone. These ingredients are like wrapping your skin in cling film and can aggravate your prickly heat, as they reduce the amount of sweat that can escape your skin. The resulting build up of sweat inside the skin can then create prickly heat rash symptoms.

Green People natural water-repellent sunscreens use natural waxes, which do not contain the pore-clogging ingredients which can aggravate prickly heat . Their sunscreens are also free from PABA, parabens and artificial colours and fragrances.

Instead they all contain lots of organic ingredients with the children’s one containing 84% organic ingredients including Aloe Vera, Eldelweiss, Olive, Avocado and Rosemary.

Now that summer has finally reappeared we have had the chance to use the sun lotion numerous times. It is quite thick and does require some rubbing in but doesn’t leave a white cast when you do and I found that it actually helps you makes sure you haven’t missed anywhere. It isn’t greasy at all and the kids have all said it feels comfortable to wear. I’m most pleased that there have been no reactions or prickly heat since the switch, although the real test with that will be abroad this summer. I’m hoping that even if they do suffer it will be to a less extent.

My new favourite facial sunscreen

I was also sent the SPF30 scent free sun lotion 200ml – £22.50 and the Scent free facial sunscreen SPF 30 50ml – £18.00 both of which I have been impressed with. In particular the facial sunscreen is my new favourite. For the past few years I have been prone to getting malasma patches on my face (areas of darker skin) and so I have to be really careful with my face in the sun. I also get eczema and spots, lucky me I know, so wearing sunscreen on my face can be a real pain. I’ve struggled to find one that my skin likes and I’m really, really impressed with Green People’s one. I’ve been using it daily for a few weeks now and I love how it makes my skin feel. It isn’t shiny, rubs in well and feels moisturising too.

The facial sun cream contains antioxidant-rich plants including Edelweiss & Rosemary and also anti-ageing Avocado & Green Tea protect and maintain collagen and elastin in the skin. With 78% certified organic ingredients I’m happy to be using it on my skin.

I’ve teamed up with Green People to offer you the chance to win a bottle of the Organic Children Scent Free Sun Lotion SPF30 – 150ml and the Organic Children Aloe Vera Lotion & After Sun which has a wonderful cooling effect as well as locking moisture into the skin to keep it soft and supple.

Green People sun lotions are made with over 80% natural ingredient including a blend of safe, non-toxic filters which ensure that all Green People sun lotions meets European UVA protection standards. Green People takes care to ensure that, unlike some chemical UV filters, our effective UV filters do not irritate the skin or harm the environment. However, in some instances the filters we use can stain some fabrics yellow. This staining is irreversible and, for this reason, we recommend that users take care when wearing white/ light fabrics over their sun cream and always allow the sun lotion to soak into the skin before applying clothing.
