This October half term, why not take the kids on an adventure! True, the trip to Alton Towers or weekend away to see the grandparents can be a fun way to keep them engaged in the pre-Christmas break, but instead think about opening their young minds by some of the more active and inspiring family vacations on offer not just in Europe, but right here in the UK.
The UK alone is packed full of potential destinations such as Go Ape, where families can explore the trees and overcome obstacles together before zip lining back down to earth. In Wales, meanwhile, you’ll find the longest zip line in the world and whilst we certainly wouldn’t recommend this for younger families, the aptly named “Zipworld” does also boast an incredible trampoline cave.
What better way to answer the call of the wild than to take the family cycling around the UK and even further afield. Cycling holidays in Europe are becoming increasingly common with young families and are a remarkably affordable (not to mention eco-friendly and healthy) way to see the sights. You’ll also find yourself noticing the small things and being able to truly connect with your kids in a way that simply wouldn’t be possible by car or train.
It’s important to teach your kids from a young age to respect nature and thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities in Europe to experience some of the most awe-inspiring sights in nature. Take a trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights or closer to home, experience one of the best hikes in the world at Snowdon in Wales. The continent is brimming with natural wonder if you’re willing to look for it.
A rather subtle idea, perhaps, but one that has stood the test of time for generations. We’re not talking about hitting up a holiday park in Devon here either – we mean ‘real camping’. The Lake District is perfect for this. Pack a tent and take a few essentials and get lost in the glory of the country and the wonder of each other. Or try glamping like we did in Dorset.
Chances are that your kids have tried climbing at their local leisure centre, but wouldn’t it be amazing for them to know what it feels like to climb on the real thing? Take them rock climbing with a proper instructor and you might kick-start a lifelong passion. Spain is particularly incredible for climbing, but as ever, the UK offers more than its fair share of great beginner climbs too.
However you decide to keep your family entertained this half-term, remember that it doesn’t have to be an expensive pursuit. Hit up your local message boards and social media groups and you’ll be amazed at what’s going on in your own back garden!
